The Diaphragm
The diaphragm is a large muscle. This muscle separates the chest from the abdomen. It is located at the botton of the ribs.
  • When this muscle contracts* it pushes the up on the lungs forcing air out of them.
  • When this muscle relaxes it releases pressure* on the lungs so that they expand* and let fresh air in.
Proper breathing with this muscle causes your stomach to move in and out as you breathe.
  • Lift your rib cage and straighten your back.
  • Inhale* by breathing in while sticking out your stomach.
  • Keep your chest and shoulders still while you inhale.
  • Exhale* by pulling in your stomach and forcing air out.
  • Keep your chest and shoulders still while you exhale.
  • Repeat this several times.
  • You are using your diaphragm to breathe.
