The Human Nervous System
The nervous system is the main control center for the entire body. It sends and receives messages using electrical* impulses that are passed between nerve cells called neurons.

The nervous system is made up of two parts:

  • The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord.
  • The peripheral nervous system includes a large group of nerves throughout the body.
The nervous system has two main functions:
  • Orders are sent from the brain to body organs and tissues along motor neurons*.
  • Information about the condition of the body or the environment is sent to the brain along sensory neurons*. This information is obtained using the 5 senses.
We should supply our bodies with good food so our nerves can accurately communicate and handle various stresses to which they are exposed everyday.
